Sh*t I Like: Creepypastas

Ever read something super disturbing, and no, I'm not talking about an expose on Courtney Love. No, I'm talking about a story, a hopefully fictional story. With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to read a few of these online stories called Creepypastas.

If you're unfamiliar with Creepypastas, the name is a play on the word "copypasta" which is a block of text that's copy and pasted over and over again from blog to blog, website to website. They're a form of online storytelling. Most of the time they're presented from first person, as if the incident the story is about is happening to them. Most of the time the story is extremely realistic and sometimes inspired by true events. These stories have almost taken on a life of their own, and have become modern folklore.

I don't even know.
Other times these stories go into myths about certain rituals you can perform in order to see a spirit or monster of some sort. Most of these rituals must be done correctly or you die a terrible death. There are other Creepypastas about lost or hidden episodes of popular TV shows that always end up having something eerie or dark happen within the story line.

The Russian Sleep Experiment
Unlike the spooky ghost stories you heard around a campfire as a kid, these stories are far more graphic and often involve technology of some sort. The technology could be anything from a cell phone to a camcorder. Something that has become so ordinary in today's society can turn into something monstrous that is trying to kill you.  Other times these stories are about serial killers/monsters that lurk everywhere, watching and waiting to do something dastardly to you.

Nothing good can ever come from night cams!
What makes theses stories so creepy, is that fact that most of them are presented in a way that they could actually be real. These stories get into your mind and you think; "Wow, that could actually happen."

There are so many of them out there, I thought I would tell you about a few of my favorites:

 Slender Man

Slenderman or Slender Man is without a doubt the most popular of Creepypastas. The original story has inspired countless other stories, online games and several web series. Slender Man first appeared in a meme on the Something Awful forums. It was created by user Eric Knudsen (aka Victor Surge) and posted on June 8, 2009. The black and white photographs depict groups of children, and in the background, he Photoshoped a very tall, faceless, specter-like figure wearing a suit. The quote under the first photograph read:

We didn't want to go, we didn't want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time…
— 1983, photographer unknown, presumed dead.

The quote under the second photograph read:

One of two recovered photographs from the Stirling City Library blaze. Notable for being taken the day which fourteen children vanished and for what is referred to as “The Slender Man”. Deformities cited as film defects by officials. Fire at library occurred one week later. Actual photograph confiscated as evidence.
— 1986, photographer: Mary Thomas, missing since June 13th, 1986

Pretty creepy shit right? I'm not the only one who thinks so. Since these two memes were posted, other users expanded on what the Slender Man was by writing stories and submitting their own pictures. Then came the games, fan-art and several web series. This eventually evolved into what Creepypasta is today.

Writers from all over the world have written their own Creepypasta about Slender Man. He's usually described as an abnormally tall figure wearing a suit and no face. He kidnaps people and makes them "disappear" for unknown reasons. This is whats so scary about the Slender Man. We don't know his motives. I mean, a tall, faceless dude stalking you is scary enough, but not knowing why? That's fucking horrifying!

Your imagination can be your best friend, or at times, the scariest thing in your life.

Mr. Widemouth

"Wanna play a game? Hehehe!"
This thing is scares the diaaack out of me!!! This story is about a 5-year old kid who is somehow okay with a creepy, Furby-looking creature in his room. It's furry and has sharp teeth and seems to be innocent enough until it starts suggesting the kid plays "games" like jumping off the roof and playing with knives. It's like this little monster thing trying to manipulate a 5 year old to maim and/or kill himself. It's fucking disturbing.

"I gots some knives!"

The Pastel Man

Might be the first gay Creepypasta monster.
When someone you love is on the brink of death, NEVER make a deal with the Pastel Man! He's a light blue creature with bright pink eyes. He carries a satchel on his shoulder. He speaks with an angelic voice and promises if you do as he says, the person you love will not die. In order for this to happen, you have to get someone you know alone and call his name. The Pastel Man will show up and brutally torture this person until they die and you have to watch it happen. If you don't fulfill your end of the bargain by sunrise, you will suffer a terrible fate. In order for your loved one to live, someone else has to die.

Jeff the Killer

No... it's not okay.
"Shhh! Go to sleep." This is Jeff's common phrase. He'll creep into your bedroom and slaughter you just for fun. He has bleached, white skin, black hair, burnt skin around his eyes, and a joker like smile carved into his face sooo... you probably shouldn't go to sleep.

1999

I can't...
This story is written in a blog-type format by a man named Elliot. It's about a guy looking back on the year 1999, when he was in Kindergarten. He's father purchased him an old TV so he could watch whatever he wanted in his room. He become fascinated with Channel 21. It was a local television station with programming filmed in a town not too far from his own. As he looks back on the shows he watched as a kid, he recalls Mr. Bear who was a man dressed up in a bear costume talking to random children he invited to his basement. As Elliot looks back on the year 1999, he begins to realize how wrong these TV shows on the station were. It's soon learned that the man who ran the television station kidnapped and killed multiple children in a ritualistic way. As an adult, Elliott is investigating these murders, trying to make sense of what happened. Elliott learns that Mr. Bear is still out there. He was never caught by the police.

I like 1999 because it shows the trauma our childhoods can cause us. While the whole child-killing Mr. Bear is just a metaphor for things in our childhood we all try to get over as an adult. It's about trying to come to terms with the shit that happened in the past, and learning sometimes you have to let go in order to move on.

The "Smile Dog". Spread the word.
Again, I'm a very emotional person and tend to look for a hidden meaning in shit that's stupid. It's all about what you take away from it though. 1999 isn't the only story like it though. There's several Creepypastas written about people looking back on their childhoods and remembering an episode from one of their favorite shows and it just being "wrong." Shows like Sponge Bob Squarepants, Pokemon, Scooby Doo, etc. There also seems to be an entire genre of creepypastas devoted to My Little Pony. I don't get it, I thought MLP was already creepy enough.

From Abandoned by Disney
In this day and age, I feel like creepypastas might be used by young people as a way of materializing their fears in a way that makes sense to them. This is a scary time we're living in with terrorists and recessions, illness, natural disasters, etc. I feel like these stories are kind of delving into the minds of modern young people and giving them something to escape to. Again, I might be going to deep here, but this is my blog dammit! I do what I want! Suck it!
