Fan Friday - Estella

"Are you tired, Estella?"

"Rather, Pip."

"You should be."

"Say rather, I should not be; for I have my letter to Satis House to write, before I go to sleep."

"Recounting to-night's triumph?" said I. "Surely a very poor one, Estella."

"What do you mean? I didn't know there had been any."

"Estella," said I, "do look at that fellow in the corner yonder, who is looking over here at us."

"Why should I look at him?" returned Estella, with her eyes on me instead. "What is there in that fellow in the corner yonder — to use your words — that I need look at?"

"Indeed, that is the very question I want to ask you," said I. "For he has been hovering about you all night."

"Moths, and all sorts of ugly creatures," replied Estella, with a glance towards him, "hover about a lighted candle. Can the candle help it?"

"No," I returned; "but cannot the Estella help it?"

"Well!" said she, laughing, after a moment, "perhaps. Yes. Anything you like."

"But, Estella, do hear me speak. It makes me wretched that you should encourage a man so generally despised as Drummle. You know he is despised."

"Well?" said she.

Ooooh!!! We're getting classy up in this bitch! Talking about grown-up stuff like classic literature and books and shit. Give me a crumpet for my Long Island Ice Tea! I don't know what a crumpet is, but it sounds fucking delicious and I want it. On today's Friday... what? I never know what I'm saying. Anyway, we're talking about the icy-cold temptress herself, Estella from Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations.

You might be asking yourself, "Dustin, what made you want to blog about Estella?" I'm glad you asked! The other day I was listening to the great musician known as Alanis Morissette. There's a line in her song "All I Really Want" that goes: I'm like Estella, I like to reel it in and then spit it out. And then I was like "Oh! Dat bitch from the Charles Dickens novel!" and thats how we got here. It was a messed up stream of consciousness, but I'm glad we took that ride together.

Estella is a character in the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. The character is used as a comparison to Pip, the protagonist of the story. Like Pip, Estella is an orphan, but was raised by the wealthy, eccentric Miss Havisham to be an aristocratic lady, where as Pip was raised by his sister and her husband to be a hard working blacksmith in the real world.

Miss Havisham herself is fucking crazy. She was jilted as a young bride, and since that very day, she has refused to change anything. It's as if time has stopped for her, she has left everything from that day to decay and rot as a reflection of her heart. She even wears the same wedding dress. It's actually really gross, if social services were a thing back then, Estella would have been taken from this bitch.

Miss Havisham has Pip come over and play with Estella. It's all a part of her sick, twisted game to have Pip fall in love with the beautiful Estella, only to break his heart. You see, Miss Havisham didn't only raise Estella to be a lady, she also raised her to be absolute poison to men. She's cold and emotionless. She's never learned how to love or show her love, she's only ever learned how to break a man's heart. This is Miss Havisham's revenge on all men. This is unfortunate for Estella. She never learns how to deal with her feelings, she only learns how to properly seduce men into falling in love with her, and then simply breaking their hearts. She's used as a pawn for vengeance and cruelty by Miss Havisham.

Despite the fact that Estella tells Pip over and over that she does not love him, Pip continues to pursue her. He's absolutely infatuated by her and deeply loves her. She refuses any pass he makes at her. Despite what Estella says, her actions prove otherwise. She shows numerous times in the novel that she has some sort of affection for Pip. She holds him in much higher regard than other men. I think Estella actually loves Pip, but due to her inability to deal with emotions, she has no idea how to love him. She can't recognize the feelings she has due to her upbringing of strongly suppressing emotions.

Pip is warned of Estella's cold heart numerous times, but it doesn't matter. Though she is raised to inspire unrequited love from men around her, Pip somehow feels what he and Estella share is different. Because of Estella, Pip's life is turned upside down from a young age. He feels the need to become better than his current station in life. He feels the need to become a gentleman as opposed to a working stiff, all to become the right man for Estella. When he's older, Pip is given support by an unknown benefactor and moves to London to learn how to be a gentleman. It's here Pip is thrown into Estella's social circles. He relentlessly pursues her, but Estella continues to tell him that she can't love him, in fact, she can't love anyone, including her adopted mother. Pip and Estella go visit Miss Havisham, and despite her gestures of affection toward Estella, she is met with nothing but coldness. She is shocked that Estella is either unable or unwilling to return her love. Estella points out to Miss Havisham that it was her who taught her to be hard-hearted and unfeeling. Despite witnessing this, Pip still lives in hope that he and Estella will have a happy ending.

His hopes are somewhat dashed when Estella begins pursuing Pip's arch-rival Bentley Drummle. She eventually marries him for his money. Seeing Estella show such love and flirtation towards Bentley drives Pip mad. He bitterly asks Estella why she's never showed any affection or love towards him the way she has towards Bentley, leading to this bitter exchange:

"Do you want me then", said Estella, turning suddenly with a fixed and serious, if not angry, look, "to deceive and entrap you?"

"Do you deceive and entrap him, Estella?"

"Yes, and many others—all of them but you."

This shows Estella's love for Pip, though she doesn't realize it. For one, around everyone else, Estella pretends to be someone she's not, but around Pip, there are no cages, no ties to restrain who she really is. She's herself around Pip, and no one else. She also pushes Pip away, not because she doesn't return his love, but because she does love him. She knows she's nothing but a robot built to systematically destroy men. Then reason she never returns Pip's affections is because she doesn't want to destroy him or the person he is. She denies herself happiness to spare Pip her monstrous ways.

Throughout the rest of the novel, Pip makes several frustrating attempts to awaken some sort of emotion in Estella, but it's fruitless. Pip's devotion and affection toward her leaves Estella confused. She sees Pip's efforts as irrational and doesn't understand why he continues on a path of self-destruction. Despite marrying for wealth and prosperity, Estella's life is far from easy. Bentley viciously abuses her until his death at the hands of a horse he apparently abused as well.

"Estella looked towards Miss Havisham, and considered for a moment with her work in her hands. Then she said, 'Why not tell you the truth? I am going to be married to Mr. Drummle.' I dropped my face into my hands."

There is really no definitive ending for Estella and Pip. She has been manufactured to be a bitter, cold person, never knowing or feeling love. Though I think she does love Pip, she's never able to come to terms with her feelings. In the end, Estella continues to be unable to love Pip, but Pip seems to be okay with it. Though she does apologize to him, assuring him that the death of her husband has opened her heart a bit. She never tells Pip she loves him, only that she empathizes with him.

Estella has always been one of my favorite females in classic literature. She's definitely my favorite Charles Dickens' character. She's so complex and fascinating. As a female character in a novel, she's very ahead of her time. She's a woman who is built for the purpose of destroying men and she knows it. Her malice and cruelty doesn't make her a villain though. This is all she knows. She doesn't know how to express emotion or love. She's a sad character, and though she's cold and bitter, we as readers are still rooting for her. We want her to have a happy ending despite all she's done, because in the end, we can't blame her for her actions. She's just as much a victim as the brokenhearted men she leaves behind her.

Fan Friday - Jigglypuff

Let's set some time aside to pay tribute to the round, pink diva known as Jigglypuff!

Uhhh Pikachu... you should probably turn around.
Too late.
Jigglypuff has always been my favorite Pokemon (Along with Kadabra and Vulpix/Ninetales). Everyone would talk about Charizard or Pikachu, and then I'd bring up how I loved Jigglypuff and usually get made fun of for it. I didn't care. I think all of those who were in to Pokemon as a kid had that one that they connected with and loved, Jigglypuff happened to be mine. I couldn't help it! We were so much alike. Both me and Jigglypuff are adorable, round, short-tempered and we tend to bitch-slap assholes who piss us off.

Get 'em!
Jigglypuff is known as the Balloon Pokemon. It's a round, pink ball with pointy ears and elongated feel. It has larg blue (sometimes green), alluring eyes and short, stubby arms. It's skin is soft and rubbery like a balloon and pink curl of fur between it's ears, adding to it's adorable appearance. Jigglypuff is known for it's soothing lullaby and it's short temper. It will relentless (bitch)slap it's foe over and over. It's really fucking cute. I can't even handle it.

Puff, puff, puff!
In the anime, Jigglypuff is introduced in episode 45 entitled The Song of Jigglypuff. Ash and his friends stumble upon Jigglypuff as they escape the hectic, cranky city of Neon Town. Jigglypuff seems to be upset, and it's soon revealed that it can't sing. Ash and his friends help Jigglypuff regain it's voice, she then performs for the group, but Jigglypuff's beautiful voice is so soothing it puts everyone to sleep.

The original Pokemon card.
Jigglypuff get's pissed, so she finds a marker and scribbles all over their faces while they're passed out. When they wake up, they apologize and try to sit through her performace again. They fall asleep again and Jigglypuff get's pissed again. They decide to take her into Neon City where no one ever sleeps, and let her perform. Jigglypuff's voice is so soothing that she puts everyone to sleep again and scribbles over everyone's faces and then peaces out.

You shouldn't have fallen asleep, bitch!
For the rest of the series, Jigglypuff shows up randomly trying to find someone to listen to her beautiful song without falling asleep. She'll see different things like a stool or a platform and imagine them as a stage for it to perform on. It's pretty much like my life.

In the actual first generation GameBoy Game Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow, Jigglypuff can be caught. I always had a Jigglypuff and eventually evolved it into Wigglytuff, thought they didn't make it particularly easy to catch or train one in the first generation games.

You wouldn't like it when it's angry... however, you still think it's fucking adorable.

The Pokedex entry for Jigglypuff:

"When its huge eyes light up, it sings a mysteriously soothing melody that lulls its enemies to sleep."

-Red and Blue

Uses its alluring eyes to enrapture its foe. It then sings a pleasing melody that lulls the foe to sleep.

-Yellow

Meowth is about to get fucked up!

DON'T FUCK WITH THE PUFF!
I've always felt bad for little Jigglypuff. All it's ever wanted to do is be a star. I mean, how would you feel if you had an amazing voice, but before you were able to finish your song, everyone fell asleep? You'd never hear their applause or praise, just snoring. I would draw on everyone's face too! Hell, I would everyone's face anyway.

Bitch! I'm fabulous!
A lot of people really hate Jigglypuff. It's been called useless, stupid, weak, etc. It's okay, you don't become a huge star without getting some haters, and make not mistakes, this dramatic, fabulous, round, pink diva is a star, and it will always be one of the most popular Pokemon ever. Don't fuck with her! She'll put you to sleep, draw on your face and continuously bitch-slap you. Suck on that haters!

Take that Clefairy!

But seriously, fuck you Clefairy!

Fan Friday: Daphne Blake

Hi. Welcome back. If this is your first time reading my blog... WHERE YOU BEEN BIATCH!?!?! Just kidding... but seriously.Today we're doing something a bit different. I decided to talk about some of my favorite fictional characters. I know I already do this with Malicious Mondays, but those are times I focus on evil characters. Contrary to popular belief, I like other characters besides the villains... not often, but occasionally. I'm starting off with the vivacious red head Daphne Blake from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Let's get purple up in here!

I like your eyeliner gurl.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? originally aired on CBS as part of their Saturday morning lineup in 1969. This was dicey time children's television due to parent run organizations, such as the  Action for Children's Television (ACT), had began pressuring TV executives about the violence children's cartoons such as Jonny Quest and Space Ghost. The executive in charge of daytime programming at CBS at that time was Fred Silverman. Silverman began looking into other cartoons to revitalize their Saturday morning programming.  He contacted two geniuses known as William Hanna and Joseph Barbera to come up with a show similar to The Archie Show which had been wildly popular. After a lot of creative teamwork and brainstorming, the show Scooby-Doo, as we know it today, was born!

In case you've been living under a rock for last four decades, Scooby-Doo is about the adventures of five teenagers and their dog who solve spooky mysteries. They call themselves Mystery Inc and they drive around in a groovy van. Mystery Inc. consists of Fred, the leader of the pack, Velma, the smart-one of the group, Shaggy, the goofy one, Daphne, the princess and of course they're sidekick Scooby-Doo. Each episode, the crew find themselves in the midst of a mystery, usually involving "supernatural" elements. All the monsters and ghouls they chase end up being people who are usually doing it to swindle or steal money or precious objects. It's a typical "whodunnit" series.

We can forgive the scarf. It was different time.
The character of Daphne Blake was inspired by the character of Thalia Menninger, portrayed by Tuesday Weld, on the popular late 1950's/early 1960's sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. In the first incarnation of Scooby-Doo. Daphne is the typical "damsel in distress" stereotype. She is even referred to as "Danger-Prone Daphne" due to her clumsy nature and ability to get kidnapped/imprisoned by the villain, usually resulting in her needing to be rescued.

Goddammit Daphne.
As Scooby-Doo went on and began to evolve over the decades, Daphne was made a stronger, more self-confident character as times began to change and attitudes toward's women changed. In the later incarnations of the franchise, Daphne becomes a serious member of Mystery Inc. helping solve the mysteries, rather than being hindrance on the investigation.

Hey, don't forget, Timmy had to be rescued by a dog too!
To me, Daphne is more than just a cartoon character. I might over think things, but I see Daphne as a sign of the times. At first she's seen as the typical pretty girl of the team. The weak link, often targeted by the bad guys. While most of the character of the franchise are static characters, Daphne proves to be a dynamic character over the many incarnations of Scooby-Doo.

"Where's Fred and Velma?" WHO CARES!?!?! #ByeFelicias
After original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and it's various spin-offs, Fred, Velma and Daphne disappeared from the show, now strictly focusing on Shaggy, Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo. After a four year absence, Daphne returned in The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show (1983) later changed to The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries (1984). Daphne was now a successful investigator in her own right. She was more confident, intelligent and able to defend herself. She then got a starring role in the short-lived The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo (1985). Gone was the helpless female that Daphne was before. The mid-80's was a time when more and more women began filling the workplace, starting careers of their own. Daphne was example that women can be successful and follow their passions.

Daphne in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.
Scooby-Doo was re-vamped again in 1988 with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. This showed the Mystery Inc gang as children, solving various mysteries. In this incarnation, Daphne is far more sassy and intelligent than her other variations before. In the late 90's several direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movies came out, showing Daphne as a glamorous, successful TV investigative journalist with her own show. This was during the time female journalists such as Katie Couric, Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters were extremely popular.

Celebrity status!
In the live-action theatrical films, Daphne is portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar breathes a bad-ass, sassy vibe into Daphne, which of course she does, she's fucking Buffy! This version of Daphne is not one to be fucked with! She's smart, vivacious, fashionable and she knows martial-arts. In the movies, Daphne actually beats up the bad guys! It's AWESOME!

SMG as Daphne. We love you Buffy.
Yes, maybe you can say I over-think things, or that I'm stupid, but I love the character of Daphne. I've always loved her. It's so interesting to watch a character evolve over the decades. It shows how society's views change and grow. Daphne is one character that you can definitely see this with. She has grown and evolved with us as a culture and will continue to do so, hopefully, with many more generations of Scooby-Doo to come.

Daphne got 80's all up in dat bitch!
She's still going in. Daphne don't care! She has 0 fucks to give! PEACE!

Daphne in What's New, Scooby-Doo? (2002 - 2008)

Daphne is born again in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010 - 2013)

I hope I didn't bore you too much. Have a fantastic weekend! Do everything I would do, which is probably everything you shouldn't do, so you should do it.

GET A GREEN SCARF!!!

BYEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
